The ACPA AGM in Calgary was a great success. Our
guest speaker, Steve Larter, entertained about 75 members and
guests with his extensive knowledge on "the Biogeochemistry of
the Oil Sands". Friendships were renewed over lunch and new
members were welcomed.

NEW
Membership Categories
New regulated membership categories were
approved by a vote of the ACPA members at the AGM. The ACPA is
working with the Alberta government to amend the Professional
Chemist Regulations to include the new member categories. More
membership information is available on the ACPA website under membership categories.

Full-Day Course in
Professional Ethics for Chemists

This
one-day course will provide an introduction to the ethical
framework that guides professional chemists in the conduct of their
duties. The objective of this course is two-fold: to ensure a
working knowledge of the fundamental ethical concepts embedded in
Professional Chemist accreditation and to learn how to analyze
work-related ethical situations and make the best possible
decisions.
Exam
A
short written exam will be given at the end of the course to
evaluate the progress of the participant in developing ethical
decision-making skills. This exam will be based on a case
study.
Anyone attending the course and successfully passing
this exam will receive a completion certificate. Those receiving
this certificate will have completed the upcoming ethics course
requirements of the ACPA.

Meet
Your President - Maurice Shevalier
 The ACPA
President for 2013-2014 is Maurice Shevalier.
Maurice is a Research Associate and Manager of the
Chemistry Lab at the Applied Geochemistry Group in the Department
of Geoscience at the University of Calgary. He graduated with
a B.Sc. in Chemistry from the University of Calgary in 1982 and
then entered graduate school and finished a M.Sc. in
Electrochemistry in 1985 and in 1992 a M.Sc. in Physics
specializing in Computer Modeling.
In 1985 he secured a Research Assistant position in the Diagenesis
Research Group in the Department of Geology and Geophysics at the
University of Calgary. Maurice was responsible for sampling and
chemical analysis of oilfield brines, ground and surficial waters.
He was later promoted to Research Associate and also became
involved in geochemical computer modelling.
Currently, Maurice is involved in a number of
international projects including the Shell Quest project, a long
term CO2 sequestration project in Basal Cambrian
Sands. The research involves flooding core samples with
supercritical CO2. Computer
simulations are used to examine the change in the isotopic
composition of the CO2 as it leaks from the storage
aquifer to the surface.
Maurice recently finished working on the
International Energy Agency Green House Gas Weyburn CO2
Monitoring and Storage Project, a project which lasted over a
decade and the PennWest CO2 Enhanced Oil Recovery
project, which lasted for eight years. He is currently working on a
number of manuscripts for these projects.
Maurice has served several years as a Director for
the ACPA Board and has generously shared his considerable knowledge
in water chemistry in several ACPA short courses for the oil
industry.We look forward to a great year with Maurice as
President.

ACPA Frank W. Bachelor
Award for 2013
The winner
of the 2013 Frank W. Bachelor Award for Service to the Chemical
Profession was Robert Taylor. Robert is a past president of the
ACPA and is currently the Manager of Halliburton's Reservoir
Studies Team in Calgary.

The recipients of this award receive a plaque and
complimentary membership for life, subject to the recipient's
continued qualification for Profession Chemist status. The award is
named in honour of Frank
Bachelor, Ph.D., P.Chem., who was a founding member
of the ACPA, its first President, and a member of the Board of
Directors for 12 years.

ACPA Scholarship Winner for 2013
The Arthur Bollo-Kamara
Graduate Scholarship in Chemistry went
to Breanne
Kamenz (U. of Lethbridge). The winners of this
scholarship must display academic excellence in chemistry, service
to the chemical profession, service to the community, and
achievement in the arts or cultural activities.

The graduate scholarship was named in memory of
Dr. Arthur Bollo-Kamara, a former ACPA President who was
instrumental in helping the ACPA become a full-fledged
professional association. He was also a dedicated
community volunteer and an accomplished musician.
Scholarship applications are available under Scholarships and Awards on the
ACPA website. The
deadline for 2014 applications is March 31.

Winners for 2013
Each year,
the ACPA presents two awards in chemistry at both the Edmonton
Regional Science Fair (ERSF) and the Calgary Youth Science Fair
(CYSF).
The
ACPA Alberta Chemist Award went
to Akshita Chandok and Manvir Dhaliwal (Aurora Charter School,
"Generate the Power") in Edmonton and to Bennett Leong
(Webber Academy, "Deicing by Design") in
Calgary.

but is sponsored by the Canadian Crude Quality
Technical Association in memory
of an exemplary member of their Board.
