2015 ACPA Annual General
Meeting
The 2015 AGM was held on Saturday, May 30, 2015 at
the Acclaim Hotel in Calgary. The meeting was well attended; our
largest meeting so far. The branding exercise led by Kurian
Tharakan was entertaining and insightful. Watch for our new brand
this fall!

ACPA members elected Catherine Evans, Court Sandau, Don White and
Lenn Liwanag to the Board of Directors. Congratulations to all of
the nominees.
Members of the Board subsequently chose Don White as
President-Elect.

I am pleased
and honoured to once again be at the helm of the ACPA. For those of
you who don't know me, I served as President of the ACPA shortly
after its inception and had a hand in developing the association's
regulation, professional development credit scheme and scholarship
criteria. My career has been varied - evolving from research
chemist for a mining company to commercial laboratory operations to
consultant to my present role as the HSE Management Systems
Specialist for Nexen Energy ULC. I am looking forward to a
challenging year as the ACPA undergoes rapid growth and an
impending change in regulatory status.

Federation of Canada's
Professional Chemists
 Members of
the council for the Federation of Canada's Professional Chemists
met in Toronto in April for their first annual general meeting.
They are working hard to agree on common minimum standards for
professional chemists across Canada and to develop a process to
assure mobility of professional chemists between provinces. These
standards will be adopted through a Memorandum of Understanding
which will hopefully be ready for signatures in the spring of 2016.
The FCPC is
also working to elevate the profile of professional chemists and to
establish regulatory bodies for professional chemists in all
provinces.

Short Course in Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are
ubiquitous contaminants in the environment. They are present in the
air we breathe and the fish and food we eat. PAHs are derived in
natural processes, diagenic processes and largely from combustion
processes. Their prevalence in the environment makes their
understanding important for all environmental
practitioners. PAHs are present in low percentage amounts in
crude oil, making them important for those working in the oil
industry as well.
This course will provide comprehensive coverage of
many aspects of PAHs from fundamentals to advanced knowledge and
usage of PAH data. The course will include: structures and
nomenclature, physical-chemical properties, analytical
measurements, toxicity and risks, regulatory guidance, remediation
and environmental forensics. The course is designed for all
environmental practitioners including natural sciences and
engineering professionals.

The ACPA Frank W. Bachelor Award for Service to the Chemical
Profession was established in 2004. This award recognizes
outstanding volunteer contributions to the chemical profession in
Alberta. The 2015 award was presented to Norman Gee. Norman served
as Board member and Registrar for many years back in the early days
of the ACPA.
